AIDailyPulse conducted a controlled measurement study to understand which sources AI assistants reference most frequently when answering B2B software-related queries. The study ran from 2026-08-18 to 2026-09-08 across 20 distinct days, using 13 keyword phrases targeting the B2B software sector. A total of 241 AI probes were submitted to Perplexity, the AI search platform. Each probe cost $0.0060 USD, bringing the total measurement cost to $1.45.
The monitored B2B software vendor was tracked across all probes to determine how often it appeared in AI-generated answers and in what tone. The keyword set covered high-intent commercial topics including digital transformation, supply chain digitization, AI customer service systems, LLM deployment, and enterprise software categories.
This study has clear limitations. It measured a single AI platform (Perplexity), a single monitored brand, and one tenant's visibility. Results may not generalise to other AI assistants, other industries, or other brands. The keyword set was finite and may not capture the full range of queries users pose. The cost and scale were intentionally small to validate the methodology before any broader rollout.
The monitored B2B software vendor appeared in 218 of 241 AI answers, a mention rate of 90.5%. This is a strong baseline signal: when Perplexity answers queries in this keyword set, it is overwhelmingly likely to reference the vendor. The tone of those mentions was neutral in 226 cases (93.8%) and positive in only 15 cases (6.2%). Neutral mentions typically indicate the AI cited the vendor as a factual reference point rather than recommending it.
Mention rates varied by keyword. The highest-performing terms all sat at 94–95% mention rate, while the lowest still reached 78%.

The domain citation data reveals where Perplexity draws its source material. The top five domains by citation count were www.etycx.com with 243 citations, www.asiainfo.com with 204, www.zzcxin.cn with 195, www.linghuicn.com with 161, and www.datamargin.com with 137. Additional domains in the top 10 included zzcxin.cn (130), nxinsz.com (66), blog.csdn.net (57), csszgroup.com (55), and t.cj.sina.com.cn (50).
Three observations stand out. First, the monitored vendor's own domain was the single most-cited source across all probes, outpacing the next domain by 39 citations. Second, the top five domains accounted for the vast majority of all citations, indicating a concentrated source pool. Third, the mention rate dropped by 17 percentage points between the strongest keyword (95%) and the weakest (78%), suggesting that keyword selection directly influences AI visibility.
The data shows that AI assistants are pulling answers from a narrow set of sources. When Perplexity answers a B2B software query, it is not synthesising from the entire web equally. It is drawing from a small cluster of domains, and the monitored vendor's own domain led that cluster. For any brand, this means that dominating AI citations is not about being everywhere — it is about being the dominant source in the domains that AI assistants already trust.
The tone distribution reinforces this reading. With 93.8% of mentions classified as neutral, the vendor is being cited as a reference, not as a recommendation. AI assistants are treating the brand as factual source material. That is valuable for visibility, but it is not the same as earning a positive endorsement. Brands that want to move from neutral citation to positive mention need to understand what shifts the tone, and that requires measuring more than just presence.
1. Map your keyword set against your top-performing terms. The data shows a 17-point gap between the highest and lowest mention rates. Identify which keywords drive the strongest AI citations for your brand and prioritise content and technical SEO efforts around those terms first.
2. Audit your domain's citation share. If your own domain is not the most-cited source in your category, investigate which competing domains are outranking you in AI answers. The top five domains in this study captured the bulk of all citations. Closing that gap requires understanding what those domains publish that AI assistants prefer.
3. Optimise for neutral-to-positive tone shifts. A neutral citation is visibility without endorsement. Review the content that AI assistants are pulling from your domain. Add comparative language, customer outcomes, and specific differentiators that give the AI a reason to frame your brand positively rather than factually.
4. Expand your keyword coverage strategically. The 13 keywords in this study produced a 90.5% overall mention rate, but the lowest-performing keyword sat at 78%. Identify the keywords where your brand is underperforming and build targeted content that addresses those gaps directly.
5. Treat AI visibility as a continuous measurement, not a one-time audit. This study covered 20 days on a single platform. AI source preferences shift as models update and as new content is published. Re-run measurements quarterly to track citation share, mention rate, and tone distribution over time.
The monitored B2B software vendor was cited in 90.5% of Perplexity answers across 13 keywords, with its own domain leading all sources at 243 citations. However, 93.8% of those mentions were neutral in tone, and mention rates varied by 17 percentage points depending on the keyword. AI visibility is not just about being referenced — it is about controlling which sources AI assistants draw from, which keywords drive the strongest citations, and whether those citations carry a positive or neutral tone. Brands that measure these dimensions systematically will have a clearer path to influencing AI-generated answers than those that rely on traditional SEO alone.
