In 2026, local discovery moved from a results-page problem to an answer-selection problem. Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity increasingly respond to queries such as “best emergency plumber near me” by naming a small set of businesses instead of displaying a long list of links. Businesses omitted from the generated answer may receive no exposure, even if they rank well in conventional local search. [8]
Consumer behavior reflects that shift. BrightLocal’s 2026 consumer research reported that 45% of surveyed consumers had used AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% in its previous survey. The same analysis cited research showing that users were less likely to click traditional results when Google displayed an AI-generated summary. [5] In Google AI Overviews, 83% of searches reportedly produce no external-site click; in AI Mode, the figure reaches 93%. [9]
The visibility gap also varies by platform. SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index found that ChatGPT recommended only 1.2% of tracked locations and Perplexity 7.4%, compared with 35.9% visibility in Google’s local three-pack. It also reported that business-profile accuracy was 68% on ChatGPT and Perplexity, versus 100% on Gemini, which is grounded directly in Google Maps data. [7] For GEO, this means a brand can be locally prominent in Google Search yet absent, misdescribed, or replaced by competitors in AI answers.
Google’s local data became particularly important because Gemini is grounded in Google Maps and Google Business Profile information. HousingWire reported that Google’s Maps grounding capability, connecting models to more than 250 million verified places, reached general availability in 2026. [9] A complete profile, accurate services, current hours, strong reviews, and consistent location data therefore influence not only map rankings but also whether an AI system has enough reliable information to recommend a business.
The first major change is the rise of answer-level competition. Traditional SEO often measures rankings, impressions, and clicks. GEO must measure whether a business is named, how often it appears, where it appears in the answer, and which sources support the description. Localogy describes this as “Share of AI Voice”: the frequency with which a brand appears in AI-generated answers for a specific query and geographic area. [6]
Location now needs to be treated as a variable in AI visibility reporting. An assistant may recommend different businesses for the same query depending on the user’s city, neighborhood, or stated service area. Localogy notes that geographic context can change which brands are surfaced, how they are described, and which sources are cited. [10] A national visibility score can therefore conceal weak performance in the neighborhoods where a local business actually operates.
The second change is that owned websites no longer work in isolation. A Social Solutions’ 2026 analysis found that business websites accounted for 58% of ChatGPT’s local-business sources, while business mentions accounted for 27% and directories 15%. [4] This points to a combined GEO system: service pages should answer specific customer questions, while profiles, directories, review sites, and local publications should reinforce the same facts.
Structured, consistent information is especially valuable when AI systems reconcile multiple sources. The Jerusalem Post identified complete Google Business Profiles, recent reviews, consistent business information, detailed service descriptions, and location relevance as core local visibility factors. [3] For a local brand, conflicting phone numbers, outdated hours, vague service pages, or thin location content can create uncertainty that makes an assistant less likely to recommend it.
Measurement is also becoming more operational. New 2026 tools such as Grid My Business allow companies to test prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews, then map mentions, competitor substitutions, citations, answer position, and sentiment by location. [1] That kind of testing is closer to how customers use AI search than a single keyword ranking report: the query, platform, geography, and wording all affect the result.
In 2026, local visibility means being accurately understood and recommended by AI systems, not merely ranking in a map pack. Businesses should maintain authoritative profiles, publish answer-ready local content, strengthen consistent third-party signals, and track brand mentions and citations across AI platforms for real customer queries.
